RECIPE FOR HAPPINESS

Today is the Vernal Equinox, when there is equal daylight and darkness. Here’s a poem and writing prompt to celebrate to shift toward spring. If you’re in western Massachusetts, we’re beginning another six-week session of Poetry Forge this evening in Easthampton. We’d love to have you as we March into April.

A Prompt: Write a poem/text in which you provide a recipe or other instructions for how to do something. You may study the example  below to find additional strategies for how to accomplish this.  For example, Ferlinghetti employs the form of a list to compose a short, relatively simple poem, to pleasing effect. Also, think about the role of your title. Think about your last line. Part of the effect of this poem is how easy breezy it seems. There’s nothing forced or overly determined about the it unfolds on the page. Have fun. Happy Sunday.

RECIPE FOR HAPPINESS KHABOROVSK OR ANYPLACE

 by Lawrence Ferlinghetti

One grand boulevard with trees
with one grand cafe in sun
with strong black coffee in very small cups.

One not necessarily very beautiful
man or woman who loves you.

One fine day.
